Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began a four-nation Latin American tour by visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Caracas. The two outspoken, anti-US leaders have forged a close bond in recent years, and they heaped praise on one another at the meeting.
They both refer to the US as an imperialist country, and Ahmadinejad said of his counterpart that President Chavez is the champion in the war on imperialism.
Ahmadinejad is on the tour to drum up support for his nation as Western economic sanctions begin to take their toll on his nation. Some Western leaders including US President Barack Obama are unhappy with Venezuelas support for Iran, fearing that it could provide the Middle Eastern nation with much-needed money.
The two leaders laughed off criticism from the US and even joked about claims that theyre developing nuclear weaponry. Joking that the basement of his presidential Miraflores palace concealed a bomb, Chavez said: That hill will open up and a big atomic bomb will come out. He then added: The imperialist spokesmen say ... Ahmadinejad and I are going into the Miraflores basement now to set our sights on Washington and launch cannons and missiles ... Its laughable.
