Jenson Button drove a majestic race to win the Formula One season opener in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday. The Englishman qualified second behind Lewis Hamilton, but managed to overtake his McLaren teammate at the first corner. Later in the race, Hamilton was also passed by reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull team. Vettels teammate, Mark Webber, came in fourth with Fernando Alonso and Kamui Kobayashi in fifth and sixth.

After the race, Button spoke about the advances his team has made over the winter: We had a strong winter and qualifying really shows that. Its nice to come away with a win in the first race of the season. Hamilton meanwhile was left to rue missed opportunities: It wasnt my day, he said, adding: I just have to keep my head down and my day will come.

Vettels Red Bull team has been dominant over the last two seasons, and that has allowed the German driver to win back-to-back championships. But it seems that the balance of power is shifting, and Vettel acknowledged that McLaren is a strong team this year. He added, however, that his car will be very close with these McLarens guys.
