(Culture)?The Scream?

Edvard Munchs masterpiece, ?The Scream?, is expected to reel in very large amounts of money at an auction in New York in May. ?The Scream? is expected to fetch US$80 million at the auction, making it one of the most expensive artworks in the world.

Some people wonder why such a picture of misery and desperation has become so popular. Most art, however, carries a rather sad message or story. Shakespeares ?Hamlet? and ?Romeo and Juliet? are also examples of art works which looks at the less glamorous side of life. Most popular music also contains ideas about loss, unhappiness, broken hearts, and rejection.

Like a good pop song, ?The Scream? is bright, vivid, and instantly recognizable. David Jackson, professor of art histories at Leeds, says, ?It speaks to everybody V we have all felt alone and unhappy at some point in our lives.? Munch created four versions of ?The Scream?- two paintings and two pastels- between 1893 and 1910.

However, Rachel Campbell-Johnston, chief art critic of the ?Time?, does not like the work, and says that it leaves nothing to the imagination. ?The Scream? is almost childish in its directness.
