(Sport) Focus on Paralympic Games
This is Sebastian Coes Blog of 14 December which he wrote in preparation for the London Games of 2012. He is the chairman of the London Olympic Games Committee:
Sebastian has just returned from Beijing where he updated the International Paralympic Committees General Assembly about the preparation for Londons Paralympics which is the Games for the disabled which will burst into life, set against a backdrop of passion and noisy enthusiasm after the main Games on 29 August 2012.
He insists that in everything his committee does, they have the athletes at the heart of their preparation. Free TV and Internet has been secured for the Olympic and Paralympic Village in London. New standards are being set in accessibility, transport, venues, facilities and accommodation by building on the London 1948 legacy of Dr Ludwig Guttman of the previous Olympic Games in London.
He reported that the London Underground now has 63 tube stations with step-free access from platform to street. There are improved bus fleet systems and parking solutions in the city.
The goal of the committee is to inspire a lasting change in attitudes towards and opportunities for the disabled and to inspire young people from all backgrounds. Public support continues to be strong, with more than a third of UK adults believing that disabled people will enjoy a better future as a result of the 2012 Paralympics.
