(Life) German Grandmother Finds Happiness Without Money

A 69-year-old grandmother from Germany has discovered happiness, and it involves not spending a penny.

Heidemarie Schwermer took on an experiment in 1996, which was to live without money for a year. She discovered how bartering and trading services made a more fulfilling method of acquiring goods and helping others, and ended up giving away most of her possessions, and reduced her life to what would fit into a suitcase and a backpack. She then set out on the world, traveling around and trading services such as housework, gardening, cooking, or therapy sessions (she was a former psychotherapist) for food and shelter. It allowed her to experience the world around her in a much richer and freer way, and she has since continued her nomadic lifestyle, writing books and donating all the money she earns to those who are in need.

She says it was difficult for her friends and family to understand her decision, but says they now understand and accept her new lifestyle.Germanys social structure also provides a fairly safe environment for living nomadically, as people are more trusting of each other and more willing to offer (and accept) help to others. While her system may not work in your country, you can certainly adopt some of her tactics to free yourself of many of your monetary chains.
