(Politics)Scottish Activists Begin Campaign for Independence

They want the country to break away from the rest of Britain.

Last Friday could be the day that marked the beginning of the end for Britain. Scotland has been united with England for 305 years, but last week, supporters of Scottish independence began a massive campaign that they hope will end with their country becoming fully independent for the first time in centuries. A referendum on the issue will be held in 2014, and the campaigners want Scotland to go it alone two years later.

A spokesman for the "Yes Scotland" campaign said: For the first time, the issue is real because people are going to have a vote. Polls suggest the campaigners will have a tough time getting a majority yes vote, though. At present, only 40% of Scots are in favor of independence, with 50% against. The remaining 10% remain undecided.

Analysts suggest that a yes vote could give the rest of Britain a headache. The country receives a substantial amount of income from North Sea oil, and its fleet of nuclear submarines is based in Scotland. In addition to that, it has been suggested that a Scottish breakaway would make Britain look weaker on the world stage.
