(International)Africas Future Depends on A Strong Manufacturing Sector
Senegals Magatte Wade, is a self-defined serial entrepreneur. She believes that the future of Africa depends on its manufacturing strength. Bearing that in mind, she co-founded Adina World Beat Beverages in 2004 in San Francisco, and recently launched her second company, The Tiossano Tribe, producing high-end skin care products based on traditional Senegalese recipes. Her vision for Africa is one in which it becomes the first region of the world to create a socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing base. To those in the developed world who tend to be condescending, she reminds them how she started to invest in Senegal, the country of her birth after having studied in France and moved to the US.
When she went back to Senegal, she saw that bissap V a red drink made from the hibiscus plant V was basically abandoned because in Africa, it is believed that if you have made it in this world, you drink the western brands. Many women who rely on hibiscus for their livelihood lost their land because of this trend. So she created a company whose mission was to reintroduce the beverage, putting in the initial seed money herself and worked with family and friends as partners, as well as a person who was her co-founder.
Her products are now sold across the US by major retailers. Her Companys website states: While Dakar has been recognized as a center of global musical creativity, current Senegalese do not have the creativity towards becoming leaders in design, innovation and entrepreneurship. She promises 10% of profits to a foundation to prepare the next generation to become global leaders in those areas.
