(Politics)The Situation in Syria Is Not What You See

Journalists have been hearing this message and similar ones when they met the governor of Daraa, Mohammed Khaled al-Hannus. He claims that three quarters of the problem in Syria comes from television networks exaggerating the situation. According to him, what began as a legitimate protest against corruption and political stagnation back in March, was addressed and resolved by the government of President Bashar Assad.

Now those in the streets are called armed gangs by the authorities. However, those same journalists are being told by those young people in the street, hurriedly and secretly, about daily government raids on local homes, ubiquitous security checkpoints and crackdowns on dissent. Each side claims a monopoly on the truth as the battle for the hearts and minds of Syrians rages.

As more and more people are killed and the situation becomes increasingly militarized, many are afraid that a full-blown war could fatally wound Syria. For the moment there is just bloodshed with the deaths of more than 4,500 victims of violence, and the use of rumor and counter rumor. The war of words and bullets just goes on.
